Energy Efficiency for Europe has joined more than 90 companies, industry associations and civil society organisations in signing a joint open letter calling for a stable and predictable post-2030 energy efficiency framework, starting with a binding EU energy efficiency target for 2040.

Addressed to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and relevant Commissioners, the letter underlines that, in the face of supply shocks, rising energy prices and increasingly frequent summer heatwaves, energy efficiency remains Europe’s first line of defence.

The co-signatories point to the strategic benefits already delivered by the EU’s energy efficiency framework, supporting a European industry employing more than 1.2 million people across over 650 production sites, strengthening energy security and reducing energy bills for citizens, businesses and local authorities. Of note is the fact that without the energy savings achieved since 2000, the EU’s energy consumption today would be around 29% higher.

Looking beyond 2030, the letter stresses the need for a framework that provides the regulatory stability and predictability needed to sustain long-term investment and energy efficiency measures, beginning with a binding 2040 energy efficiency target.
